Project description
At the same time as undertaking significant business change in recent years, our client had project managed (in house) the development and production of a number of in-vivo diagnostic imaging and life sciences products. The senior management team wished to enhance the effectiveness of its project management - from R & D through development to production, with specific reference to on-time delivery, project cost control and resource allocations.
To achieve this, the senior management team wished to introduce sustainable project management disciplines into their business - located in two separate countries - a development which would also aid communication with all of their key stakeholders. Chaucer’s leading position in project management - and its vast experience of running complex projects of all sizes in both national and international situations - made Chaucer an ideal partner to support a full review of existing projects, methodology and competencies. Our brief was to enhance relevant soft skills, and to provide an appropriate project controls ‘tool kit’ - suitable for the business and able to traverse cultural boundaries between the UK and Scandinavia.
Chaucer's scope
Thorough strategic projects review to identify opportunities to reduce timescales, improve activity flows between workgroups and development phases, and discover gaps in core project management skills, controls, tools and techniques.
Facilitation of risk workshops to highlight the need for practical risk management process and gaps in current project management process.
The development and implementation of relevant project management tools and techniques including work breakdown structures, management and project reporting in support of effective control - leading to improved stakeholder communications.
Recommendations for project portfolio management including integration of outputs and reports into web based communication systems.
Benefits
Chaucer’s interventions permitted our client to achieve their ambitions for competitive in-house, project management skills, techniques and knowledge.
By introducing a single project tool kit for the whole company Chaucer allowed the senior management and key stakeholders to have a global and transparent view of all activity.
Key projects were reviewed and recommendations made - improving project delivery from a time and cost perspective. For the first time the broad series of projects running through the various development stages could be viewed as a stream of activity - where overlaps or potential interdependencies could be identified. This also facilitated budget allocation as the company could understand which part of the development cycle needed investment - making the company proactive and consistent in delivery.
An important “soft benefit” also became apparent as variously located teams started working more closely together. Using the same tool kit and methodology, a great team spirit evolved which created a spirit of cooperation and support - not previously seen in a company where projects had remained isolated from each other.
Sustainable project management disciplines have successfully been embedded into the organisational structure – across two countries – by the Chaucer team.
