PC Replacement Strategy and Implementation
- Client
- Dunfermline Building Society
- Sector
- Financial services
Project description
The Society’s old PC network had different versions of windows and other PC software (e.g. Word, Excel etc). Software incompatibilities made knowledge sharing across the Society cumbersome and help desk and user support activities were becoming difficult and expensive to provide.
ItemPlus led an investigation into alternative PC strategies. The main criteria used were:
- Enhanced security features
- Remote system configuration – to enable system administrators to configure system-builds from the server without having to travel to a physical site to do it
- Simpler software management – to enable software distribution to be tailored according to the settings for an organisational unit or individual user
- Improved performance
- Greater reliability
- User mobility – to support hot-desking.
Once a new strategy had been agreed the ItemPlus consultant then project managed the selection and implementation of the new PCs across the branch network and Head Office. This included:
- Selection and management of a third party to undertake the different builds and installation work
- Design of the Active Directory
- Compliance assessment of existing PC applications against the chosen strategy
- Design of standard builds
- Testing, pilot, training and roll out
